Teens Filmed Themselves Firing Fireworks From Moving Truck, Sparking Blaze That Killed 69-Year-Old
Newly released police footage shows youths shooting fireworks from a pickup bed moments before a massive wildfire erupted in Washington State, claiming one life and destroying over 100 structures
New video released this week reveals the moments leading up to a deadly wildfire in Chelan Hills, Washington State.
The footage, published by police, shows several young people riding in the bed of a pickup truck, lighting fireworks one after another. Some of the fireworks are shot toward a passing vehicle, while others are aimed at the roadway and the dry vegetation alongside it. Authorities say the fireworks ignited the blaze.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on July 4, on Highway 97 near Orondo. According to investigation documents, one of the youths held a "Trooper Turret" fireworks device—a unit containing eight Roman candles capable of launching up to 240 shots in approximately 46 seconds. Shortly after the fireworks were discharged, flames were visible in the dry brush beside the highway.
The fire spread rapidly, growing into a massive wildfire. It consumed approximately 40.4 square kilometers, destroyed more than 100 structures including 19 homes, and caused damage estimated at over $6 million. Six firefighters were injured during firefighting operations.
Robert Lister, a 69-year-old Orondo resident, was killed while fleeing the fire. His car veered off the road and became trapped in the flames; his body was found inside the vehicle the following day.
The investigation led to the arrest of Michael Yakimov, an 18-year-old from Kent, who authorities say is the person seen in the footage firing the fireworks. He faces charges including first-degree manslaughter and first-degree arson. Five additional individuals allegedly involved in the incident remain under investigation.
