A sharp smell of gas was reported across Rishon LeZion Sunday evening, concentrated in the western part of the city, raising alarm among residents.

Two women, aged 30 and 80, arrived at Shamir Medical Center (Assaf HaRofeh) suffering from shortness of breath apparently caused by the leak, and are being treated in the emergency medicine department.

Following numerous reports, firefighters are currently sweeping the city in coordination with municipal inspection and rescue teams, attempting to locate the source of the sharp smell. The municipality said the searches are continuing and include checking whether the source may be outside city limits.

According to the municipality's statement, as of now no hazardous materials incident has been identified, and accordingly no special instructions have been issued to the public.

The municipality called on residents to avoid spreading unverified messages on social media and in groups, and to rely on official updates from the municipality, fire services and police.
